New Delhi, Feb 4 : Victor Menezes, a seasoned banker and co-founder of the American India Foundation (AIF), has passed away. He was widely respected for his commitment to service and social change, positively impacting over 18.88 million people in India through various initiatives. Menezes was celebrated for his empathetic leadership and visionary contributions.
A veteran Indian-American banker, Menezes, who passed away on Monday, played a key role in establishing AIF, a prominent philanthropic organization launched after the devastating 2001 earthquake in Bhuj. “As we mourn his loss, we honor his legacy as a leader, mentor, and true advocate for AIF. His commitment to service and social change will continue to inspire future generations,” said AIF in a statement. Menezes had served as the chairman emeritus of the organization, which now reaches millions through initiatives focused on empowering women, children, and youth, especially in healthcare, education, and livelihoods.
After retiring from Citigroup as senior vice-chairman following a distinguished 32-year career, Menezes devoted himself to fostering partnerships between India and the United States, as well as between organizations, individuals, and communities. AIF’s co-founders and leadership, including Lata Krishnan, Harit Talwar, Pradeep Kashyap, and Nishant Pandey, praised Menezes for his intellect, expertise, and, most notably, his compassionate leadership. “He brought not only his resources and networks to AIF, but also his human touch. He connected with the people we served, always keeping their dignity at the forefront of our efforts,” they said.
Menezes believed deeply that AIF’s work was not charity, but a chance to create lasting change. His sense of humor and high standards made him both a beloved and demanding leader. He was also a board member of MIT Corporation, Catholic Charities, and Eisenhower Fellowships, and served on the advisory boards of IIT Bombay and INSEAD.
Despite his extensive achievements, Menezes always said that AIF’s mission was the most meaningful to him. He marked his 75th birthday at AIF’s New York Gala last year, underscoring his deep connection to the organization’s cause.
