Panjim, Feb 11 : The United Goans Foundation (UGF), a registered society based in Margao, has called on the Public Undertakings Committee (PUC) to investigate the export of 28.5 tonnes of frozen beef to Iraq. The exports were facilitated through a partnership between the government-run Goa Meat Complex and Karnataka-based Sunface Agrofoods Pvt Ltd.

In a letter to the PUC, UGF executive committee member Dominic Noronha questioned whether the Goa Meat Complex is fulfilling its primary role of supplying meat to the local population or if it is being leveraged for private export interests. He urged the committee to address several concerns related to the facility’s operations.

Noronha emphasized that the large-scale beef exports have affected local meat availability, with consumers and traders experiencing significant shortages, especially during festive seasons. He also raised doubts over the Goa Meat Complex’s reported revenue model, questioning whether the facility, which claims to earn only Rs 500 per slaughtered animal, is being misused for private profit. The UGF has urged the PUC to conduct a financial audit and assess whether the prioritization of exports is causing artificial scarcity, impacting both local consumers and Goa’s tourism and hospitality sector.
