Gurugram, Dec 12 : The BMW Group and UNICEF have announced a transformative partnership to enhance education for 100,000 children across rural India. Focused on foundational learning and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills, the initiative aims to empower children, particularly adolescent girls, from marginalized communities in Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
This partnership is part of a global collaboration between BMW and UNICEF to reach over 10 million children annually through education and training, with a strong emphasis on STEM subjects in countries like South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand.
In India, the program will focus on strengthening literacy and numeracy skills at the primary level and fostering creativity, curiosity, and innovation through hands-on STEM learning experiences for adolescents. Adolescent girls from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Tribal Ashramshalas will particularly benefit from this initiative.
The collaboration will include teacher training to improve STEM instruction, addressing gender stereotypes, and promoting leadership and skill development for girls. The establishment of low-cost maker spaces in schools will enable students to explore design thinking, computational skills, and physical computing, making STEM education engaging and practical.
Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative, emphasized the importance of STEM skills for future opportunities, especially for girls, stating, “This partnership invests in making education inclusive and accessible, laying a foundation for greater economic and social self-reliance.”
