Bengaluru, May 16: In one of the largest private philanthropic initiatives in India, the Azim Premji Foundation has pledged ₹2,250 crore over three years to support college education for girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Under the program, girls who have completed Classes 10 and 12 from government schools will be eligible to apply for the Azim Premji Scholarship. Each selected student will receive ₹30,000 per year, amounting to ₹90,000 over a standard three-year undergraduate course. The Foundation aims to support up to 2.5 lakh girls annually, translating to ₹750 crore per year.
“This initiative is aimed at enabling girls to complete their higher education,” said Anurag Behar, CEO of the Azim Premji Foundation. “If a girl has finished her schooling from a government institution and secures admission to a recognized college, she qualifies for the support.”
Set to begin in September 2025, this is the largest direct benefit transfer initiative undertaken by a not-for-profit private organization in India.
Addressing a Systemic Gap
According to the Economic Survey 2024–25, India has nearly 15 lakh schools and 25 crore students, with about half enrolled in government schools. While primary school enrollment is high (93%), the number significantly drops to 77.4% by middle school and only 56.2% complete Class 12. College enrollment rates are even lower, particularly among girls, largely due to financial barriers.
“India has made significant progress in school education, with gender parity at the primary level,” Behar noted. “But higher education remains out of reach for many girls from low-income households, often due to financial pressures. Our hope is to change that.”
He emphasized that supporting girls through higher education not only empowers them individually but also transforms entire communities, as educated women are more likely to contribute meaningfully to social and economic development.
A Legacy of Giving
Founded in 2001, the Azim Premji Foundation has worked extensively in education, training thousands of teachers across 60 districts in six states. It has since expanded its scope, establishing Azim Premji University, a grant-making arm for NGOs, and primary healthcare clinics in underserved areas.
Over the past two decades, Azim Premji has donated $21 billion, amounting to 92% of his personal wealth, making him one of the world’s most generous philanthropists. The Foundation currently holds a $38 billion endowment, making it the fifth-largest private philanthropic endowment globally.
Azim Premji’s commitment to giving has drawn admiration from peers across sectors. Nandan Nilekani, Infosys co-founder, once described him as a “giant figure” in Indian philanthropy.
This latest initiative continues that legacy—focusing on girls’ education as a powerful tool for nation-building, contributing toward the broader vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
