New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has announced an extension of FCRA registration validity for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with pending renewal applications until December 31. The notice cautioned that NGOs whose renewal applications have been denied or whose FCRA licenses have been canceled are prohibited from receiving or utilizing foreign grants.

In a public notice, the ministry specified that the registration validity for FCRA entities previously extended until September 29 will now remain valid until December 31 or until their renewal application is processed, whichever comes first. Additionally, entities whose five-year validity period expires between October 1 and December 31 and who have applied for renewal before their current validity expires will also have their registration extended to December 31 or until the application is resolved, whichever is earlier.

This marks the 11th extension granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) since the enactment of the FCRA Amendment Act in 2020. Sources indicate that several prominent NGOs have lost their FCRA licenses during recent scrutiny, while 281 new FCRA registration licenses have been issued in the past nine months. Notable recipients include Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation, the Abhinav Bindra Foundation, and the Vedanta-backed Cairn Foundation.

Furthermore, the ministry warned last month that any interest earned on fixed deposits or profits from investments made using foreign funding must be credited to FCRA utilization accounts and not transferred to other bank accounts.
