New York/Mumbai : High-level discussions centered on India’s emerging leadership role in the Global South took place during ‘India Day @ UNGA week’ in New York. Organized by the Reliance Foundation in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and the United Nations in India office, the events offered insights and strategies for sustainable development beyond 2030.
Isha Ambani, Director of Reliance Foundation, delivered the opening address, emphasizing what she referred to as the ‘Pancha Tantra’—five key pathways for sustainable development. These pathways include empowering women, harnessing youth potential, fostering partnerships for innovation, leveraging technology’s transformative power, and envisioning a bold future.
“As global leaders convene in New York to discuss equitable development, it’s evident that our world is undergoing rapid changes. India is stepping into its rightful role, shaping the new global order. This moment is about more than just change; it’s about collaboratively building a better future, particularly for our youth. The challenges we face are significant, but together, we can make meaningful progress,” stated Isha Ambani.
The dialogue titled “Tiger’s Tale: Crafting a New Development Paradigm” focused on India’s increasing influence as a leader in the Global South and its capacity to set new standards in global development.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the reality of leadership from the Global South, noting that India is recognized at the UN as a nation with a heart, reintegrating the Global South into critical discussions. He emphasized the importance of democratizing technologies and the global workplace in an orderly manner.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, underscored the resilience of international trade, while acknowledging the need for stronger connectivity that benefits all.
Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs for Guyana, remarked on the need for renewed political will to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting India’s leadership as crucial for ensuring no one is left behind.
P Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, pointed out the significant role of India’s youth in the political landscape, noting, “When the tale of the tiger is told, it will be narrated by the cubs and the young tigers.”
Earlier that day, panel discussions for India Day @ UNGA delved into topics such as Pathways to the Rising South, Technology as an Enabler, Women-Led Development, and the LiFE Economy, featuring expert insights on proposed solutions and future opportunities.
