During his visit, Jaishankar also met with Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, as well as Borge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum. He emphasized that with the ‘Pact for the Future’ now in effect and ongoing challenges in the global economy, it is crucial to democratize the economy, enhance mobility, develop skills, and build connectivity to successfully meet the SDGs. Adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, the SDGs aim to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality, and foster peaceful and prosperous societies by 2030, promoting a world where no one is left behind.

On September 22, world leaders unanimously adopted the ‘Pact for the Future’ at UN Headquarters in New York. This pact includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations, marking a significant step toward modernizing international cooperation to tackle contemporary challenges, as noted in a UN press release. The Pact is viewed as the most comprehensive international agreement in decades, aiming to ensure that global institutions remain effective amid rapid changes.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of moving beyond outdated systems, stating, “We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.” He noted that the Pact and its annexes offer “new opportunities and untapped possibilities.”

Furthermore, General Assembly President Dennis Francis affirmed that the Pact would “lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order—for all peoples and nations.” Overall, the agreement signifies a strong commitment from countries to uphold the United Nations, the international system, and international law.
