New Delhi, Feb 01 : – The Supreme Court on Friday directed an NGO to provide details of Rohingya refugee settlements in Delhi, along with information on the facilities available to them.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh instructed senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, to submit an affidavit specifying the locations of these settlements, whether they are in camps or residential colonies.
Gonsalves informed the court that Rohingya refugees, despite holding UNHCR cards, are denied access to public schools and hospitals due to the lack of Aadhaar cards. “They are refugees with UNHCR cards and, therefore, cannot obtain Aadhaar cards. However, their inability to access public facilities due to this has created significant hardships,” he argued.
The bench noted that since no individual complainants were present before the court and only an NGO was representing the matter, it was necessary to document and verify the settlements.
According to Gonsalves, Rohingya refugees in Delhi primarily reside in Shaheen Bagh, Kalindi Kunj, and Khajuri Khas. He specified that those in Shaheen Bagh and Kalindi Kunj live in slums, whereas in Khajuri Khas, they reside in rented accommodations.
