New Delhi, Jan 26 : The central government’s initial list of Padma Shri awardees for 2025 includes Radha Behn Bhatt, a distinguished social worker from Uttarakhand, affectionately known as the “.”

Recognizing Excellence in Social Service and Journalism

On the eve of Republic Day, the government announced the recipients of this year’s Padma awards. Among them are Radha Behn Bhatt, honored for her lifelong dedication to social work.

A Life Committed to Upliftment and Change

Born on October 16, 1933, in Dhurka village, Almora district, to Kamalapati Bhatt and Revati Bhatt, Radha Behn dedicated herself to social service at just 18. She moved to Kausani, where her work spanned numerous impactful areas, including:

– Promoting Girls’ Education and Life Skills
– Environmental Conservation Efforts
– Advancing Village Self-Governance (Gram Swaraj) 
– Championing Prohibition Movements
– Empowering Women
– Advocating the Sarvodaya Movement

Milestones in Her Activism**

– Bhoodan Movement (1957):
Radha Behn began her journey with the Bhoodan Movement, walking through villages to advocate for equitable land distribution.
– Chipko Movement and Forest Conservation (1975):
To commemorate Sarla Behn’s 75th birthday, she embarked on a 75-day journey to raise awareness about forest conservation, the Chipko Movement, prohibition, and self-reliance in villages.
– Opposition to Mining (1980):
She led protests against mining activities threatening local ecosystems.
– Himalayan and River Conservation (2006–2010):
Her surveys of the Himalayas and rivers highlighted ecological issues, leading to her firm opposition to hydroelectric projects with adverse environmental impacts.

Continuing Her Mission

Currently associated with **Lakshmi Ashram in Kausani**, Radha Behn remains active in her social work endeavors. At present, she is in Sevagram, Wardha, Maharashtra, but is expected to return to Kausani soon.
