New Delhi, Jan 26: Launched on October 31, 2024, to mark Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary and National Unity Day, the Mera Dhaga, Mera Tiranga, Mera Desh campaign by the Flag Foundation of India celebrates 75 years of the Indian Republic while honoring Patel’s vision of a unified nation.
The initiative invited citizens from all parts of India to contribute threads, symbolizing their patriotism, which were then woven into a monumental Tricolour. This campaign, aimed at fostering national pride and educating citizens about the Tiranga’s significance, served as a platform for millions to come together under one flag.
Naveen Jindal, President of the Flag Foundation of India, emphasized the significance of the initiative, saying, “The Tiranga represents the soul of our nation. Each thread is a testament to our ancestors’ legacy, the craftsmanship of our artisans, and the enduring spirit of India.”
The campaign utilized both online and offline engagement strategies, including social media outreach and events like the Kurukshetra Geeta Mahotsav, to encourage participation. By December 25, 2024, heartfelt contributions poured in from across the country, which were processed at a state-of-the-art textile recycling facility in Panipat. Skilled weavers transformed the threads into 20 kilograms of yarn, incorporating traditional Indian weaving techniques such as Sambalpuri, Maheshwari, and Pochampalli ikat.
Shallu Jindal, Vice President of the Flag Foundation of India, reflected on the campaign’s impact, stating, “This journey from thread to flag was about weaving the stories of our resilience, heritage, and unity. Every thread symbolizes our shared traditions and commitment to the Tiranga’s ideals.”
The campaign culminated in the creation of a 12 x 8 ft Tricolour, representing India’s unity and rich cultural traditions. This handcrafted flag was presented to the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and will be ceremoniously hoisted at an official event, symbolizing national pride.
“It is our hope that this Tiranga, woven with love and dedication, inspires every Indian to uphold its values and ideals,” added Naveen Jindal.
