Madhya Pradesh, Jan 25 : In a startling case from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a young man who spent seven years chained due to superstitious beliefs has been rescued. The operation, carried out by the NGO Pravesh in collaboration with local authorities in the Khajrana area, brought relief to Zaid, the victim of this inhumane ordeal. Zaid had suffered severe mental and physical distress while being kept chained outside his home, as his family, influenced by superstition, believed he was under the spell of black magic.

Rusty Chains Broken During Rescue

The rescue team encountered rusted chains, indicating prolonged neglect. They used hammers and chisels to break the chains and free Zaid. The rescue was far from straightforward, as the family strongly opposed the intervention, insisting that Zaid’s mental condition warranted such treatment as part of a superstitious cure. The police played a vital role in ensuring Zaid’s safety amidst the resistance.

Receiving Care at a Mental Health Facility

Zaid has since been admitted to a mental health hospital for necessary treatment. His seven years of exposure to extreme weather conditions—ranging from harsh cold to searing heat—while chained outdoors have significantly worsened his condition.

This disturbing incident sheds light on the dangerous consequences of deep-rooted superstitions, raising urgent questions about their continued hold over society. Zaid’s recovery is underway, and authorities are now investigating the circumstances that led to his prolonged suffering.
