Madurai-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Padikkattugal organised a special Diwali celebration for more than 250 children affected by HIV and 12 underprivileged families with members living with disabilities, distributing new clothes, sweets and firecrackers as part of its community outreach initiative.
The celebration was held at a marriage hall in Madurai on October 31 and coincided with the organisation’s 14th anniversary. The initiative was organised in collaboration with Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), Madurai, bringing together volunteers, healthcare representatives and members of the local community.
The programme aimed to ensure that children and families facing social and economic challenges could participate in the festive celebrations and experience the joy of Diwali.
Gift Collection Drive Mobilises Community Support
As part of the initiative, Padikkattugal established a gift collection box at a popular textile showroom in Madurai. Volunteers interacted with shoppers, raised awareness about the needs of children affected by HIV and collected clothing for more than 250 children.
The collection drive provided an opportunity for members of the public to contribute directly to the celebration. The donated clothes, along with sweets and firecrackers, were distributed to the children during the event.
The participation of shoppers and volunteers helped bring together community members around a shared effort to support children and families who may face additional social and economic difficulties.
Collaboration with Government Rajaji Hospital
The celebration was organised in collaboration with Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. The event was attended by Deputy Mayor T. Nagarajan, GRH doctor M. G. Rajinikanth and government schoolteachers.
The participation of representatives from healthcare and education institutions added to the community-focused nature of the programme.
The initiative also highlighted the role of local organisations and volunteers in supporting vulnerable groups through awareness campaigns, donations and inclusive celebrations.
Padikkattugal Marks 14 Years of Community Work
The Diwali celebration coincided with the 14th anniversary of Padikkattugal, which organised the programme as part of its efforts to reach children and families in need.
By bringing together public participation, volunteer support and institutional collaboration, the organisation facilitated the distribution of festive essentials to children affected by HIV and families with members with disabilities.
In a separate community initiative, another volunteer group, Madurai Thirunagar Pakkam, was scheduled to celebrate Diwali with tribal communities at Vedar Puliyankulam village near Thiruparankundram on Sunday.
The activities reflect how community organisations and volunteer groups can use festivals as opportunities to promote inclusion and extend support to underserved sections of society.
