The Adani Foundation, in partnership with ACC, the cement and building materials company within the Adani Portfolio, is supporting rural women in Sindri, Jharkhand, through livelihood initiatives designed to create sustainable sources of household income.
One such beneficiary is Nishu Devi, 45, from Chhatatand village, who has been able to establish a regular income of between ₹7,000 and ₹8,000 per month through support provided under the Sangini Mart initiative.
Nishu, a mother of four, had been facing financial difficulties because her family’s primary income depended largely on her husband’s earnings from small-scale farming. With agricultural income subject to uncertainty, meeting everyday household expenses and planning for her children’s education had remained a challenge.
Sangini Mart Creates a New Livelihood Opportunity
Recognising Nishu’s circumstances, the Adani Foundation extended support to her through the Sangini Mart initiative, helping her pursue a sustainable livelihood activity.
The intervention was aimed at enabling her to develop an independent and more predictable source of income. With guidance and support, Nishu was able to establish her livelihood activity and gradually build a regular monthly earning stream.
She now earns approximately ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 every month, providing her family with an additional source of financial support alongside agricultural income.
The initiative is significant for households where earnings can fluctuate depending on agricultural conditions and seasonal opportunities. By helping women establish their own income-generating activities, livelihood programmes can provide families with another avenue for financial stability.
Additional Income Supports Children’s Education
For Nishu, the impact of the additional income extends beyond meeting immediate household requirements.
Her earnings have helped reduce the family’s dependence on uncertain agricultural income and have strengthened its ability to plan for the future. Most importantly, the additional financial support is helping her contribute towards the higher education of her children.
Her experience illustrates how a relatively small, locally supported livelihood opportunity can create a direct economic impact for a rural household.
The Sangini Mart model forms part of broader livelihood interventions undertaken by the Adani Foundation and ACC in communities around their operating locations. The Foundation’s wider sustainable-livelihood programmes focus on enabling community members, particularly women, to develop income-generating opportunities and improve financial independence. At the ACC Sindri location, livelihood interventions have also included initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity and creating additional income opportunities for communities. The Foundation’s work in the area includes solar-powered lift irrigation projects supporting farmers and efforts focused on strengthening rural livelihoods. ACCLimited
Within this wider framework, Sangini Mart focuses on enabling women to establish and manage local livelihood activities, giving them an opportunity to contribute directly to household earnings.
From Financial Vulnerability to Greater Stability
Nishu Devi’s experience highlights the potential impact of women-centred livelihood programmes at the household level. Her monthly income of ₹7,000 to ₹8,000 represents not only an additional financial contribution but also greater independence in supporting family priorities.
For a household dependent largely on small-scale farming, having another predictable income source can help provide greater financial resilience and improve the ability to plan for expenses such as children’s education.
The initiative demonstrates how community-level livelihood support can connect women with practical economic opportunities while strengthening the financial stability of rural families.
As programmes such as Sangini Mart expand across communities, the focus on women-led livelihoods can form an important part of broader efforts to promote economic participation, self-reliance and sustainable development in rural areas.
