Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd. has been conferred with the Mahatma Award 2026 for CSR Excellence for its flagship sustainability programme, Bisleri Greener Promise, marking the company’s second consecutive recognition at the Mahatma Awards. The award acknowledges Bisleri’s work across water conservation, plastic waste management, circularity and community engagement. This year’s awards received more than 1,900 entries, with 70 organisations and individuals recognised across different categories.
The recognition comes as Bisleri continues to expand its sustainability efforts through programmes focused on responsible plastic consumption, recycling, water stewardship and community participation. Through Greener Promise, the company has positioned environmental responsibility as part of its broader business and stakeholder engagement strategy.
The Mahatma Award draws inspiration from the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi and recognises organisations and individuals working towards social and environmental change. The 2026 award ceremony was attended by Dr Santrupt Mishra, Rajya Sabha MP, and Dr Kiran Bedi, who served as Chief Guest, along with Sukanya Bharat Ram, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter, as a Guest of Honour. The award was instituted by Gandhian and lawyer Amit Sachdeva and is supported by Rajashree Birla, Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Rural Development and Communication Initiatives.
Greener Promise Drives Sustainability Focus
Bisleri’s Greener Promise is the company’s flagship sustainability programme covering areas including recycling, water conservation and environmental sustainability. The company’s sustainability platform states that its programmes are designed around the objective of creating a greener future, with initiatives such as plastic recycling and water-conservation projects.
The programme has also been associated with Bisleri’s efforts to advance circular-economy models by encouraging responsible collection, segregation and recycling of plastic waste. The company’s approach involves working with different stakeholders, including communities, institutions and local partners, to increase participation in responsible waste management.
Water stewardship forms another major component of the programme. Bisleri has undertaken projects focused on water conservation and restoration, including work with communities and local institutions to improve water availability and strengthen water resources. The company’s sustainability initiatives also include a water-credits framework intended to encourage greater attention to water conservation across industries and sectors.
The company has previously reported initiatives aimed at improving resource efficiency within its own operations. In February 2025, Bisleri announced a partnership with Schneider Electric to improve energy efficiency and expand solar power across six of its manufacturing plants in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. The project was expected to support an increase in Bisleri’s green-energy usage to nearly 33%.
Bisleri Leadership Highlights Long-Term Sustainability
Commenting on the recognition, Dr Angelo George, CEO, Bisleri International, said receiving the Mahatma Award for the second time reflected the consistency of the company’s sustainability efforts.
George attributed the programme’s progress to the work of Bisleri’s employees, partners and communities involved in implementing its sustainability initiatives. He said the company would continue focusing on building a responsible business and contributing to India’s sustainable development.
The event also featured K Ganesh, Director – Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Bisleri International, who participated in a panel discussion on Corporate Environmental Responsibility. The discussion examined how businesses can adopt and promote environmentally responsible practices, with Ganesh sharing perspectives on how Bisleri incorporates sustainability across its operations.
CSR Good Book Highlights Bisleri’s Sustainability Journey
The event also saw the launch of the CSR Good Book, a compendium featuring sustainable and socially responsible brands, corporations, public-sector enterprises and foundations.
Bisleri’s sustainability journey was included in the publication, highlighting the company’s work around circular-economy practices, water stewardship and its water-credits framework. The inclusion provides an overview of how the company has sought to connect sustainability initiatives with its broader business activities and stakeholder engagement.
The 2026 recognition follows Bisleri’s Mahatma Award 2025 for CSR Excellence – Waste and Material Productivity, which recognised the company’s efforts towards plastic circularity, water conservation, waste segregation and responsible recycling through Greener Promise.
Bisleri’s Business and Sustainability Footprint
Bisleri International has more than five decades of operating history and is known primarily for its packaged drinking water business. The company has expanded its portfolio into other beverage categories, including Vedica Himalayan Spring Water, Bisleri Limonata, Bisleri Pop and Bisleri Soda, while also operating its direct-to-consumer Bisleri@Doorstep platform.
The company says it operates 130 plants, supported by more than 6,000 distributors and 7,500 distribution trucks across India and the UAE market. Its packaged drinking water undergoes a stated 10-stage purification process and 90 quality tests before reaching consumers.
With Greener Promise forming an increasingly important part of its sustainability strategy, Bisleri’s second Mahatma Award recognition places greater attention on the company’s work around resource conservation, plastic management and community participation. The award also comes as companies increasingly integrate environmental considerations into their operations, supply chains and engagement with communities.
