The Karnataka government is working to establish the Karnataka Heritage and Cultural Foundation (KHCF) as a dedicated institutional mechanism to protect, conserve and promote the state’s vast cultural and archaeological heritage.
The initiative is being jointly pursued by the Tourism Department and the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, with a proposal prepared for consideration by the state Cabinet. Tourism Minister KJ George said the proposal is expected to be placed before the Cabinet shortly.
The proposed foundation is intended to provide a more systematic and sustainable approach to the conservation of Karnataka’s historical monuments, archaeological sites, museums and other cultural assets. The government also envisages the foundation playing a broader role in promoting Karnataka’s art, literature, architecture and heritage at national and international platforms.
The scale of Karnataka’s heritage resources has emerged as a key factor behind the proposal. According to George, a survey conducted across 239 taluks identified nearly one lakh historical monuments and archaeological sites across the state. The findings highlight the breadth and diversity of Karnataka’s cultural heritage, while also underlining the financial and institutional challenges involved in maintaining such a large number of sites over the long term.
The proposed KHCF is therefore expected to create a dedicated platform through which resources for heritage conservation can be mobilised and deployed in a more structured manner. A sustainable financial mechanism could help support preservation efforts beyond individual government programmes and enable long-term planning for sites requiring restoration, maintenance and protection.
Beyond conservation, the foundation is envisioned as a vehicle for cultural promotion. The government wants to use the platform to showcase Karnataka’s diverse traditions and cultural achievements, including its architecture, literature, arts and historical legacy, to audiences within India and abroad.
Karnataka is home to a wide range of archaeological and cultural sites representing different periods of the state’s history. The proposed foundation could provide a framework for bringing conservation, cultural promotion and heritage-related initiatives under a more coordinated institutional structure.
The initiative also reflects a broader effort to position heritage as an important component of Karnataka’s tourism and cultural identity. By combining preservation with international cultural outreach, the government aims to ensure that the state’s historical and cultural assets are not only protected but also presented to a wider audience.
With the proposal awaiting Cabinet consideration, further details regarding the foundation’s structure, funding mechanism, mandate and operational framework are expected to emerge once the government takes a formal decision.
