Serentica Renewables, the clean energy platform backed by the Vedanta Group, has commissioned the first 200 MWh phase of its planned 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking a major milestone in its strategy to deliver reliable, round-the-clock renewable power to India’s commercial and industrial (C&I) sector.
The project represents Serentica’s entry into utility-scale battery energy storage, strengthening its ability to supply clean electricity even during periods when solar and wind power generation is unavailable.
200 MWh Phase to Enable Round-the-Clock Clean Energy
The newly commissioned battery storage system will store surplus renewable energy generated during the day and discharge it during peak demand hours, allowing industries to access renewable electricity even during the night.
Built with a modular architecture, the battery system is designed to offer operational flexibility, rapid response and scalability while improving grid stability and supporting greater integration of renewable energy into the power network.
Supporting One of the World’s First RTC Renewable Models
According to Serentica Renewables, the Bikaner project supports one of the world’s first time-block-based Round-the-Clock (RTC) renewable power supply models for industrial consumers.
The project demonstrates how battery storage can transform intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind into reliable, dispatchable power available throughout the day.
Commenting on the development, Akshay Hiranandani, CEO of Serentica Renewables, said the commissioning marks an important step towards delivering dependable clean energy to India’s industrial sector.
He noted that battery energy storage systems will play a crucial role in India’s next phase of energy transition by improving the reliability, flexibility and availability of renewable power.
7 GWh Energy Storage Pipeline Planned
The Bikaner facility is the first step in Serentica’s broader storage strategy.
The company plans to develop a 7 GWh battery energy storage pipeline over the next two years, significantly expanding its portfolio of dispatchable renewable energy solutions for commercial and industrial consumers.
The investment reflects the growing importance of battery storage in ensuring uninterrupted renewable energy supply as India accelerates its clean energy transition.
Strengthening FDRE Portfolio
The commissioning also complements Serentica’s expanding Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) business.
Earlier this year, the company signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC Limited to supply 200 MW of FDRE to Uttar Pradesh DISCOMs.
The project combines solar, wind and battery storage across multiple states to deliver renewable electricity during morning and evening peak demand periods.
Long-Term Focus on Battery Storage
Serentica has been steadily building its battery storage capabilities over the past two years.
In June 2024, the company invited global expressions of interest for 800 MWh of standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems, including:
- 200 MW / 400 MWh two-hour storage systems
- 100 MW / 400 MWh four-hour storage systems
These projects are expected to support the company’s long-term renewable energy commitments beginning in 2026, reinforcing its strategy of integrating large-scale battery storage with renewable generation.
The latest commissioning further positions Serentica Renewables as a key player in India’s rapidly evolving clean energy and energy storage ecosystem.
