Andhra Pradesh has proposed the development of a 7,872 circuit kilometre (ckm) Green Energy Corridor along with five 400 kV substations under the proposed Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-III scheme to strengthen the evacuation of renewable energy across the state.
The proposal was submitted by the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APTRANSCO) to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) on December 27, 2024, the Central Government informed Parliament.
Transmission Infrastructure for Renewable Energy
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik said the proposed transmission network is designed to facilitate the evacuation of electricity generated from upcoming solar power projects and pumped storage plants to the state grid.
The proposal includes:
- 7,872 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines.
- Five 400 kV substations.
- A combined transformation capacity of 9,500 MVA.
The planned infrastructure is expected to significantly strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s power transmission network as renewable energy capacity continues to expand.
Supporting 18 GW of Green Energy
According to the proposal, Andhra Pradesh plans to integrate approximately 18 GW of renewable energy into the national grid through the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III.
The planned capacity includes:
- 11 GW of solar power
- Around 7 GW of pumped storage projects
The corridor will play a crucial role in ensuring efficient transmission of clean electricity from renewable energy generation centres to demand hubs.
Pooling Stations Planned Across the State
The proposed Green Energy Corridor will include renewable energy pooling stations at:
- Mudigubba
- Talupula
- Ramayapatnam
- Porumamilla
- Koppaka
These substations will serve as key collection and transmission points for renewable power generated across different regions of Andhra Pradesh.
Awaiting Central Approval
The Union Government informed Parliament that Andhra Pradesh is among several states that have submitted proposals under the proposed Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme.
However, the Centre clarified that the scheme has not yet received formal approval, and therefore no funds have been sanctioned or allocated for the project at this stage.
The Ministry also stated that timelines for approval, funding and implementation will be decided after the scheme receives clearance.
Strengthening Clean Energy Infrastructure
The proposed Green Energy Corridor aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s broader ambition of developing 160 GW of green energy capacity in the coming years.
By expanding transmission infrastructure alongside renewable energy generation, the state aims to improve grid reliability, facilitate large-scale clean energy integration and support India’s long-term renewable energy and decarbonisation goals.
