The Central Government and the Bihar Government have agreed to accelerate the implementation of key renewable energy programmes, including the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, following a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
The meeting focused on assessing the progress of Bihar’s renewable energy sector, reviewing ongoing projects and formulating strategies to ensure the timely execution of major clean energy initiatives across the state.
Among the schemes reviewed were the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA), Floating Solar Projects, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), the Green Energy Corridor, Small Hydro Power Projects, and the solarisation of government buildings.
During the meeting, Ajay Yadav, Energy Secretary of Bihar and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), presented a detailed roadmap outlining the state’s progress, ongoing renewable energy projects and future expansion plans. The presentation highlighted Bihar’s efforts to strengthen clean energy infrastructure while increasing access to affordable and sustainable electricity.
Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), assured the Bihar government of continued technical, financial and policy support from the Centre to accelerate renewable energy deployment across the state.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi praised Bihar’s innovative Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model and encouraged the state government to expedite the implementation of approved projects. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to supporting Bihar’s renewable energy ambitions through close collaboration and timely assistance.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed officials to implement the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, and other renewable energy programmes in mission mode to maximise their impact. He also proposed the launch of a “Solar Didi” initiative, inspired by the successful Surya Mitra programme, to encourage greater participation of rural women in promoting rooftop solar adoption and spreading awareness about clean energy.
Bihar Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar alias Bulo Mandal said the state government is committed to fully utilising Bihar’s renewable energy potential with continued support from the Central Government. He added that the ongoing initiatives will strengthen energy security, promote clean power generation and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Bihar Government, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and state power utilities, reflecting the Centre and State’s shared commitment to accelerating Bihar’s clean energy transition.
The renewed collaboration is expected to boost rooftop solar adoption, improve rural energy access and help Bihar play a more significant role in India’s renewable energy mission while supporting the country’s broader climate and sustainability goals.
