Bhopal, Nov 30 : In a move to secure enhanced compensation for victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy suffering from cancer and kidney disorders, several NGOs have approached the Supreme Court. The NGOs argue that the current compensation does not adequately address the long-term health impacts endured by survivors of the 1984 industrial disaster.
The petition highlights the continued struggles of affected individuals who require extensive medical treatment for chronic illnesses linked to the tragedy. The NGOs are urging the Supreme Court to reevaluate and increase the compensation, emphasizing the need for justice and sustained support for the survivors and their families.
The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters, resulted in the release of toxic methyl isocyanate gas from a pesticide plant, claiming thousands of lives and leaving many with lifelong health issues. Despite multiple compensation packages announced over the years, activists maintain that the funds allocated are insufficient to cover the escalating medical costs and provide relief for the victims.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear the plea soon, with survivors and advocates hoping for a favorable decision to ensure improved healthcare access and financial assistance for those battling severe health conditions caused by the disaster.
