June 29: Fresh off her maiden French Open triumph, Mirra Andreeva made a winning start to her Wimbledon campaign by defeating Poland’s Magda Linette 7-5, 6-4 in the first round on Monday. The 19-year-old Russian overcame a stern challenge from the experienced world No. 59 to book her place in the second round at the All England Club.
The fifth seed admitted that clearing the opening hurdle at a Grand Slam brought a sense of relief, especially after the pressure that comes with arriving as a reigning major champion. Having lifted the Roland Garros title just three weeks ago, Andreeva said she was determined to prove that her success on clay could be carried forward onto grass.
The match was far from straightforward as Linette, who has reached the third round at Wimbledon on three previous occasions, used her experience to trouble the young Russian. The Polish player frequently approached the net, mixing sharp volleys with delicate drop shots to disrupt Andreeva’s rhythm. Both players exchanged service breaks in each set, making for a closely contested encounter.
Andreeva relied heavily on her powerful serve, firing eight aces, although she also struggled with consistency at times, committing seven double faults. She held her nerve in the closing stages of the opening set with two unreturnable serves before gradually taking control in the second, wearing down Linette from the baseline and confidently serving out the match.
The victory keeps Andreeva’s remarkable season on track as she attempts to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2015 to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year. Her recent form has established her among the favourites for the grass-court Grand Slam despite limited experience on the surface.
A much tougher challenge now awaits the Russian teenager in the second round, where she will face 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. Acknowledging the difficulty of the contest, Andreeva praised her opponent’s experience and grass-court pedigree, adding that she would work closely with her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, to prepare a strategy for the highly anticipated clash.
