June 27: Zydus Lifesciences and Sunshine Healthcare Lanka have entered into a joint venture to establish a $20 million pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s domestic drug production capabilities.
The foundation stone for the new facility, to be developed under the joint venture company Zydus Sunshine Lifesciences, was laid on June 26 at the Board of Investment (BOI) Zone in Horana. Spread across nearly four acres, the plant will manufacture pharmaceutical products primarily for Sri Lanka’s domestic retail market.
The project comes as Sri Lanka continues to promote local manufacturing in essential sectors to reduce reliance on imports and improve access to quality healthcare products.
The equal joint venture combines Zydus Lifesciences’ expertise in pharmaceutical manufacturing and technology with Sunshine Healthcare Lanka’s established distribution network and market presence. The partners aim to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities, facilitate technology transfer, and support the development of Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical industry.
In addition to boosting domestic medicine production, the facility is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the long-term growth of the country’s healthcare ecosystem.
The companies said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving healthcare accessibility while supporting industrial development through advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The investment also aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to enhance healthcare security by expanding domestic production capacity and reducing dependence on imported medicines.
Once operational, the manufacturing facility is expected to play a key role in supplying high-quality pharmaceutical products to the Sri Lankan market while strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical value chain.
