New Delhi : Scalene Coffee Research Organization, a member of Organisation De Scalene Foundation, a global leader in sustainable technology, has launched COPTERS (Coffee Pulping Water Recovery System), an innovative system designed to minimize water wastage in coffee pulping. COPTERS recovers up to 90% of water used in the process, offering a sustainable solution for water management in coffee production. This Pulp Effluent Recovery System aims to reduce environmental impact and address water scarcity issues associated with traditional coffee processing.
In traditional coffee pulping, approximately 20,000 liters of water are used to produce a kilogram of high-quality coffee parchment. COPTERS drastically lowers this figure to just 500 milliliters per kilogram, setting new standards for water efficiency in the industry. Utilizing advanced fine particle shortwave dissociation technology, COPTERS treats and purifies wastewater, allowing it to be reused and minimizing environmental harm. This innovation not only assists coffee producers in meeting regulatory standards but also lowers operational costs and enhances environmental sustainability.
COPTERS provides coffee farmers with an economical, eco-friendly solution, reducing water consumption while generating valuable bio-nutrients and offering potential carbon mitigation options, including carbon credits. Key benefits include contributions to a circular economy, zero liquid discharge, enriched bionutrients, and water credits, which help lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) and operational expenses (OpEx) for coffee producers.
The first COPTER System was deployed during the 2023-24 harvest season at Bagavathi Estate in Kodagu’s Madapura. Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar, Chairman of Organisation De Scalene Foundation, commented, “Our team has tackled a long-standing issue in coffee processing. With this technology, coffee lovers can enjoy their drink without the guilt of wasting 145 liters of water per cup. This is a game-changer for global coffee production, aimed at securing a sustainable future for generations.”
