NewsVoir, Decatur [Georgia], September 19: In a significant demonstration of its commitment to driving positive change, the Piramal Foundation (PF) recently participated in the 5th Annual Juliet E. Shield Symposium in the United States. This event showcased the Foundation’s innovative, compassion-driven initiatives in India’s education and healthcare sectors. Hosted by the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University in early September, the symposium provided a global platform for PF to highlight its strategies for building resilient communities and the extensive impact of its efforts on India’s public systems.

Key representatives from the Piramal Foundation, including Monal Jayaram (Co-founder and Senior Core Team Member of the School of Education and System Change), Anshu Dubey (Core Team Member, SOESC), and Kartik Varma (Co-founder and Senior Core Team Member, Piramal School of Health), engaged in meaningful discussions at the event. They shared insights on the Foundation’s initiatives aimed at fostering empathy and compassion in education and healthcare, emphasizing the transformative power of compassion in reshaping public systems and nurturing a healthier, more empathetic society.

A notable highlight was the 7-state SEE Learning scale-up, which seeks to incorporate compassion into educational environments, thereby enhancing student learning and resilience. The symposium also featured the compassionate leadership initiative at Sitamarhi District Hospital, which supports over 100,000 healthcare workers across Bihar by promoting a framework of compassionate care.

Monal Jayaram remarked, “The symposium allowed for invaluable exchanges with global leaders and scholars, enriching our understanding of how a systems-thinking approach to compassion can tackle fundamental challenges in public systems. As we wrap up this inspiring event, the Piramal Foundation team is more determined than ever to continue our mission of transforming lives through compassion and sewa bhaav.”

The Piramal School of Leadership (PSL) focuses on leadership development through personal transformation in public systems. Tailored for middle managers and senior leaders in the government sector, PSL encompasses four schools: School of Education and Systems Change, School of Climate and Sustainability, School of Health, and School of Inclusion. Aligned with national priorities, PSL emphasizes ‘Sewa Bhaav’ and innovation to address complex public system challenges. Through rigorous training and strategic partnerships with state governments and other organizations, PSL empowers leaders to effect meaningful change.

The School of Education and Systems Change at PSL prepares students for the workforce with a focus on self-agency and compassion, addressing the future-readiness gap by instilling ‘Sewa Bhaav’ in learners and middle managers. This approach fosters a transformative shift towards compassion and resilience within the public education system.
